Mother’s Day is a cherished time each year when families come together to honor the love, sacrifice, and influence of mothers. While today it is often associated with flowers, gifts, and special outings, the origins of this meaningful holiday are rooted in something much deeper—love, remembrance, and even social activism.
The Origins of Mother’s Day
The modern celebration of Mother’s Day in the United States is largely credited to Anna Jarvis, who established the holiday in the early 20th century. After the passing of her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, Anna sought to create a day that would honor not only her own mother’s legacy but the sacrifices and devotion of all mothers.
The first official Mother’s Day celebration took place in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia. From there, Anna Jarvis tirelessly campaigned to make the holiday nationally recognized. Her efforts paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation establishing Mother’s Day as a national holiday, to be observed on the second Sunday of May each year.
Early Influences and Purpose
Although Anna Jarvis is recognized as the founder, the idea of honoring mothers dates back even earlier. Activist Julia Ward Howe proposed a “Mother’s Day for Peace” in 1870, encouraging mothers to unite for peace following the devastation of war.
Anna Jarvis, however, envisioned the day as something more personal—a time for families to reflect, show gratitude, and spend meaningful time together. She even promoted wearing a white carnation as a symbol of a mother’s love.
